My kitchen is clean. Nothing rotting. Rubbish emptied daily. From today, put everything in fridge, eg dried rice, lentils, muesli, not happy about this.

You can have maggots and moths in jars that you bring home from the store. My friend opened a jar of salad seasonings. The lid was sealed and there was a protective covering of foil also. She opened it and moths flew out. This problem is caused by old food that is not pulled from the shelves.
It has nothing to do with how clean you are.
You can get small brown beetles in any kind of wheat product. They will attack everything in your pantry. You have to throw everything out and scrub your shelves/walls/everything.

I learned to purchase pantry items in small portions. Keep flour, ceareal, etc. in well sealed containers. I buy flour only when I need it.

If you keep the jars sealed, then I think you have the same problem I had. It turned out to be larvae in the sealed bags of rice I bought from Safeway. They took the bags back but I lost the bag I opened and had left sealed for about a month on a shelf.

Check your packages carefully before opening (perhaps change brand names), and when pouring into jars. Make sure the jars are sterile (through a hot cycle in dishwasher with soap) to kill off any eggs that may be hitching a ride on the glass or the lid.

Maybe you have an open window nearby and the bugs are so small they get in through the screen and into the jars when you're putting fresh food in them or if you leave the lids off while cooking?

There are many possibilities.

It's horrible to open it up and you find all these beetles and larvae looking at you and wriggling around. Not to mention then what to have with supper!

Good luck!

Maggots, and moths are perfectly fine for your dog to eat. Matter of fact you could try them yourself. Moths are supposed to have a peanut butter like taste. Lots of grizzly bears eat up to 40,000 moths a day. maggots are served live in rare types of cheese, and I am not sure about the black bugs, but they are probably harmless as well. I dont recommend serving your dogs food with bugs in it though. There is probably more of a danger of your dogs getting aspergillus, which is a fungal infection that can be transmitted through food. The reason I say this is, the food had to have gotten wet or there was some kind of moisture in the food for the maggots to be there. If the food was wet there is a good chance for mold to be present. I doubt that it is the storage of your food that was the problem, as long as it is kept dry where it is stored, or in the dog bowl. I have 3 dogs and buy food in large amounts and their food is always readily available from a food dispenser I got at Pet Smart.

What kind of food jars are you using ? If they have a screw on lid like a fruit jar (Standard or wide mouth) then I would suggest the purchase of a Vacuum sealer. We live in an area that is HOT and HUMID and where bugs abound have had no problems all dried foods stay fresh, you can also purchase containers to seal cookies crackers. We like to do the small marshmallows just to watch them grow It has saved us from having to throw out a lot of food Also the bags are great for meats and veggies. NO AIR no freezer burn NO air no foreign lifeforms.

get rid of ALL the dry foods you have! that way they have no place to go. Then try to find a place where the infestation started. VIOLA
