Because we all live on the same planet and share the same space ... one of the toughest pragmatic answers is given in JK Galbraith's The Culture of Contentment, where he states that in the old days the discontened outnumbered the contented, and so it was in the interests of the contents to throw the discontents a bone or two - like trade unions, minimum wage, etc, - in case there were something like the French Revolution all over again and the discontents decided to hang the contenteds from the lamposts. He goes on to add that nowadays, and probably as a temporary phenomenon, the contented believe that they outnumber the discontented and so don't need to appease them (hence, tax cuts for the rich, punishment for the poor) but - wait for it - in a globalised world the contented classes will soon find again that this view doesn't hold.
There. I've given you an argument that has nothing to do with ethics, religion, or other values; nor have I mentioned that many of the rich got that way through inheritance and connections rather than effort. I've given you a purely pragmatic argument. And hold yourself lucky: at the moment you probably have a job, your health, connections, etc. But you may be closer to the edge where you need other people's compassion than you think.

Listen. Im a strongly socialist liberal on the far left. Heres my answer.
Being successful and wealthy is great. Businessmen are vital to the survival of this country. However, there is a point where the amount of wealth someone has is just absurd.
In all truth, no one needs a billion dollars. The huge amount of wealth these businessmen make (top 2% own 80% of the wealth) is just way out of proportion to the good these men do for society.
Instead, use the billions of dollars that insanely wealthy businessmen make, and hand it out in the form of larger pay checks for the workers that keep the company going. Give this money to schools, hospitals, libraries. Hand the money out as aid to those who have close to nothing (which is about 3 billion people).
In short:
1) Businessmen are vital to the world, and very important
2) The very very richest of them make far too much money
3) Hand this money to the poor of the US in the form of increased educational spending, healthcare, and other government aid programs.

The question presupposes that the liberals pained with a wide brush want to punish the wealthy. I find it funny that many liberals are also wealthy. Some of them take pride in paying their fair share of the cost of running the nation. However, it is an individual thing. Personally, I am just looking to find decent employment in an era where such things are hard to find. I have degrees, certifications, additional training and diplomas, and, yet, the opportunities are not there. Do I care what the wealthy have or don't have? No. Do I want them punished? Hell No. It is hard to make it in the US. Hard as hell. So congrats to them. Now, lets just make sure others get a fair piece of the economic resources.

Since you don't understand, let me explain the "trickle-down theory" the republicans do while in office. The object of this is to cut taxes for the rich and give them all the benefits, then the money they have is suppose to "trickle down" to the poor in more jobs and a better economy. The real design is to get the rich more money. How do you think the rich got rich? By hoarding money. Do you think the rich will spend money unnecessarily? No. So what happens to that money? They either keep it, or they will spend it in their own circle. How does that help the 99% of others?
The wealthy needs to pay taxes like everyone else. Why are they allowed to get more breaks because they are rich? That is ridiculous.
My question is do you think that someone who needs government assistance for their children while they are between jobs is stealing?

You have a horribly warped perception of Liberals.
We are traditionally socially conscious. I am glad that welfare can help people when things are tough. I have never heard of any liberal calling welfare 'stealing'. That is the propaganda that the republicans created to turn us against the immigrants of this country.
What I'm against is the "Good Ole Boys" club that Cheney & Bush belong to. I want everyone to be rich! No jealousy, but I also don't want any of my loved ones fighting a war that lines the pockets of that The Boys club. Which is exactly what this war is doing for Cheny and many others close to Bush.
What Im aginst is Right Winged Christians being so invloved in our govenrment. Questioning my values & integrity when if they took off their blinders they would see that once agian their nominated leaders are liars, perve O's and worse!! It isnt my integrity that is in question its you republicans that need to look in the mirror.

while not a liberal I can answer that and it simple show me any wealth person who was not aided by some one on a lower tier and some of them work a lot harder then the average wealthy person and it gotten a lot worse for those on the bottom tier which is minimum wage as if adjusted for inflation it min wage should be around 10 dollars an hour now as it was 9.72 last year when I did a MBA paper about it and walmart
and found it interesting as every democrat was accused of being to generous when they raised the min wage but in fact they never did al they realy did was was adj it to the inflation during there term while the min wage was deeply eroded during each republican term
the reason for min wage is very important as if you erode the min wage below a certain standards crime will rise and anarchy will follow as people will not tolerate being starved or there children to go hungry on a large scale

Get what you pay for, and pay for what you get.
The wealthy, business owners & corporations in particular, reap a whole lot more benefit from government services than poorer citizens do, even the ones on welfare. Construction & maintenance of roads to transport goods, technological & other research on which products & whole businesses & industries are later based, educated employees, etc. The list goes on and on, and I'm not even touching on subsidies, bailouts, & political influence.
If I were president I'd offer a deal to the high-end taxpayers: Each year during which you can show that you got no benefit from government services, research, or subsidies, including doing business with or receiving services from anyone who has, you can pay zero taxes. In return, we raise the upper tax rates back to pre-Bush levels and raise the minimum income for the lowest tax bracket. We got a deal?

Alan Greenspan stated that the gap between the rich and poor is getting so wide that it could destroy capitalism. Liberals only want fairness and justice. We want the rich to pay their fair share of the taxes. We are for employers to fulfill their part of a contract and pay a fair wage with benefits. We want workers to be represented by unions. We want to put an end to ripoffs like Enron. We want to stop companies like Delco and United Airlines from stealing their employees pension funds. We want to stop welfare for the rich. Clinton reformed welfare and put welfare recipients to work. We want to stop corporations to stop polluting and ruining everyone's health just to make a profit. People who work and have enough salary to pay for their own things aren't stealing. Who said they were?

As far as I'm concerned, Welfare is stealing. Most people on it are capable of working, they are just too lazy to get a job. And I hear this excuse alot too "Well I can't feed my family on $7.00 an hour." Oh well. Get 2 or 3 jobs and you can. People on welfare are stealing from people who work. They are taking our money and stuffing it in their pockets. Everytime I go to the store and see someone with one of those Welfare cards, they are wearing the best shoes, outfits and the latest hair style, not to mention the gold jewelry hanging around their neck. I am paying for that, not them! I am paying so they can sit around all day and watch Jerry Springer. It makes me sick.

Well, I am a liberal and I am not on welfare. I am part of the middle class, and I think that the rich became rich off of the backs of hard-working poor. I think they should be taxed accordingly, considering that they are allowed sooo many tax write-offs that their actual taxable income is decreased substantially, which is not fair to the rest of us. I don't hate the rich, though...what a peculiar notion.
