No you haven't, they just don't make them anymore. Parents these days want convenience and ease of travel. I had the same trouble when my son was born in May. It had been 9 years since the birth of my last baby prior to this one. I also had to settle for a play yard when I had a larger playpen before.
They do make the gated playpens tho, for more room, like this one:

I haven't seen them for a while. I think they simply started making smaller playpens so it would be easier for parents to take the playpen with them if they needed to.

The old fashioned kind are just not out there anymore, for all the reasons the above posters said. I had one that I got as a handmedown, and I used it, but I handed it on too when I didn't really have room to keep it set up anymore. You might be able to find one at a garage sale or resale shop. Look on ebay too.

When I had my son 10 years ago, I got a play pen as one of my baby gifts. It was from Graco and it was blue, red, yellow and green. It had ABC's on the side of it. It was a regular sized play pen. I think you can still get one from Baby's R Us or Toy's R Us. Try to do an internet search.

I know what you mean, they are hard to come by. I have seen them at Baby Depot as well as online. Do a search I think Babies r Us might have them too. Its a rainbow colored one and its the only one they show. They do also have a gate system from One Step Ahead (online and catalog) where you set how big you want it and it comes with activities installed on them.
Good Luck :-)

I think they stopped making the old fashioned ones with the hinged supports because babies could suffocate in the mesh if the side was left down or collapsed.

Shopko sells one that looks like 5 safety gates attached together. It's nice because you can open it and put against a wall for even more room.

I Believe they are gone because they are politically incorrect. It's like most things now days Breaking wind in the same room as your kids offends their delicate nasal passages, thus, Even Farting is considered abuse! LOL
