Or quite often schools and churches also organise shoe boxes for Christmas, contact some local churches to find out what they are doing, and how you can get involved.

Now this is a tough one in our day and age.
I would probably go to the nearest skydiving site and put a few boxes in a large bag and throw them out of the plane before I jumped.
Only trouble is this maybe a little dangerous as the shoe boxes may land on someones head and that wouldn't be a very good xmas for them.
OR
Put little parachutes on the boxes and then they would land softly.
Watch for curious birds that fly by, make sure the boxes are not blue, bower birds have a tendency to steal blue boxes.
Don't forget to take the shoes out of the box.
