it has to be kept in standing water in an area w/ filtered light and left alone, you cannot baby bamboo, that means it doesn't need fertilizer or miracle grow or trimming. you just have to meke sure it doesn't run out of water. draceana and bamboo are completly different, make sure you know what kind of plant you are dealing w/.

Bamboo likes lots of bright light, temperatures above 55, soil that drains well so they don't stand in wet, indoors or out. They don't like to freeze but many varieties will withstand an occasional spell of wintry weather. Bamboo grows from segments of bamboo containing a joint. Inside, fill the fairly deep pot you choose (one with a large saucer) with a couple inches of pebbles or broken crockery in the bottom covered with a good potting soil like miracle grow, place your segments in the soil and cover with another inch or so.. Place where it can get lots of light. Water thoroughly once a week. When the saucer is dry you will know it is time to water again.
Outside, oh my, I recomend that you use a section of drainage pipe or some sort of underground barrier to contain the spreading. Bamboo goes crazy outside and can easily take over an entire lot if it is not constantly maintained. New sprouts can grow from a single joint. So a length of bamboo lying on the ground will sprout as many plants as there are joints.

Although most people have a place in mind as to where they want to plant their bamboo, one should keep in mind that most large bamboos grow quicker and do their best in full sun. They must be given ample water, fertilizer, and protection from competitive weeds. They will benefit from a windscreen and light shade when first planted as well. This is especially true of smaller plants. Fargesias, Thamnocalamus and Sasas do well with light to moderate shade. In fact the Fargesias and most Thamnocalamus are happier with some shade during the hottest part of the day. Fargesia and Thamnocalamus are the hardiest of the clump type bamboos. They can be planted without fear spreading. Most other hardy bamboos can spread by their underground rhizomes and this must be taken into account when planting them. We recommend a barrier material of 60 mil by 30 inch deep, HDPE (high density polyethylene) to control their spread.

The plant that you speak of is not bamboo at all. Bamboo is a grass, believe it or not. Anyway, the plant is a type of dracaena... like another plant that is often sold at department store green areas. They can do fine in water for a long time, maybe indefinitely in the right situation, but they are meant to grow in potting soil or potting medium. I suppose a bit of fertilizer in the water would help...very dilute... but really, they grow best in a potting medium of some sort.

Since I've put mine in soil it has flourished

bamboo plants are probably the easiest plants to care for. water it once a week, depending on how big the plant is. it can be kept virtually anywhere (just not extreme cold or heat). and also talk to it every once in a while. lol :)

bamboo plants are fairly easy to take care of..I have found that by touching the leaves daily, mine grow bigger & more beautiful....you really only have to water them about once a week or so..you dont want to overwater them. but try that, it should work, I have 2 plants at my house, and they are just beautiful....simply rub the leaves gently between your fingers, it has something to do with the oils in our skin. good luck!
