Basically it's all about the ownership of the word "marriage". Heteros don't want to let gays use the word, because then they'd have to accept that gays are equal, and oh lawdy, the sky would surely fall if that were to happen.

It's retarded, if you ask me.

Rather than "Bush" you say "Judeo-Christians". The objections to gay marriage are based on the Bible. The Pope banned same sex marriage in the 10th century and as a Christian nation we have chosen to base our laws on the Papal Bulls of the Middle Ages. A Civil Union is a union not sanctioned by the Church, since our laws are created to enforce the power of the Church, they cannot be allowed to grant the same benefits as would be granted to people who abide by Theocratic Law. Most notably, child custody rights, the rights to make legal decisions for an injured or dieing spouse, the rights of inheritance, community property rights, the right to medical coverage under a spouses employer benefits, or the simple Human right to live openly with the person you love without being subject to hate crimes from all directions.

I feel that a civil union is appropriate for gay people, I am gay by the way. A decent civil union allows all of the rights of marriage. Straight people object to gay marriage because of the religious implications of marriage, and because marriage was primarily designed to protect the children that are a result. Children do not "result" from a gay relationship, although gays can and do adopt kids and lesbians have children. These type of situations need the protection of civil union, but it can be done as a civil union, and does not need to use the sacred word marriage. I think we are asking for nothing but trouble when we insist on gay marriage. This issue even makes people who are quite tolerant of homosexuality feel uneasy. We need to focus on civil union which gives us all the rights we need. Only homophobes have serious objection to civil union. By the way, Bush would truly like to deny homosexuals all rights, including the right to live.

Well the problem with Civil Unions is that there's a whole slew of rights afforded only to Marriage. In order for gay couples to recieve the same rights as straight couple under Civil Union is if all the laws pertaining to marriage would have to be ammended to add "and Civil Unions" and there's just a whole slew of them.

A civil union is a legal partnership agreement between two persons. They are typically created for same-sex couples with the purpose of granting them benefits that are found in marriage. Some jurisdictions, however, also allow entry by opposite-sex couples. Unions that are similar to or synonymous with civil unions include civil partnerships, registered partnerships , and domestic partnerships. Some jurisdictions, such as the United Kingdom, have unions that on the paper are similar to marriage, while some only allow minimal reciprocal benefits. Many people are critical of civil unions because they say it creates a separate status that's unequal to marriage. Others are critical because they say it is introducing same-sex marriage by using a different name.

Well if you consider that the Civil Unions currently offer NO federal recognitions of any kind then your answer would be Each and Every right that is Federally granted to those in a Marriage. Tax Cuts/benefits and Spousal Social Security/Death Benefits are just the tip of the iceberg.
