There was a man that I slowly got to know and got along with.
However, there was a period of time (perhaps, wks. months, yrs?) that we were separated. Anyway, one day I heard he was in danger and I traveled across "many lands" (sounds vague, I know) to find him.

To make a long story short, when I finally reached him, we both stood face to face with deep longing in our eyes, and suddenly I rushed to him and kissed and embraced him tightly. He returned the embrace and we stayed like that for a while.

There was so much emotion that rushed through my body--it was as though I loved him.

What could it mean? (Sorry for the vagueness of the story--it's all I could remember)

Sounds like you're deeply longing for intimacy, romance and adventure. Perhaps the lengthy period of separation and the fact that you had to travel across "many lands" to find your companion suggest that you feel the probability of such intimacy is out of your grasp and unattainable.

In other words, you intensly desire a soul-mate but feel utterly hopeless and empty about the prospect of this ever occurring in real life.

Another twist on this might be that you had such a relationship at some time in your life but now this individual has moved on, perhaps, far-far-away or was snatched away from you by death. This relationship was wonderful beyond words(out-of-this-world) and you are grieving the separation or loss of someone you felt so "at one" with that you feel as though you have lossed a part of your soul or authentic self. Even imagining or entertaining the possibility of this ever happening again in your life feels "foreign" or distant.

Dreams are all symbolic. Everything you see in your dreams, represent something else. You must have something in your life that you really love and may wish to pursue. You may have dabbled a bit from time to time in this area. You now have a true wish of your heart to seriously pursue this area of interest in your life, and are willing to seek out what ever means may help get you there. You also see the goal completed in your dream. You are able to visualize your goal so strongly, that you are filled with elated emotions, such as being in love might make you feel.

I think I would interpret your dream to mean that your true love is out there - and you are going to have to go through a lot before you finally find him, but then it will be truly blessed with you do find him.

Or - it could be interpreted that this person you have looked for is in actually a secret dream you want for your life, and you are going to have to search for it - as it is in danger of being extinguished.

It means you have this desire for close relationship. You probably don't get it in reality. That is why your projected this man to be your desire. Whether this man exists in real life. In other words, you are lonely for the moment.
