What's your favortie historical instance that supports the phrase 'Necessity is the mother of invention'? If you could just tell me what person(s), to start looking at - that would be great. I am trying to find a good instance or two for a paper for school, and I thought I would ask around.

I'm into civil war history so I would choose Eli Whitney and the Cotton Gin. The seeds in the cotton were hard and time consumning to remove, slavery was about to be abolished and the south wanted to rise from ashes. Eli Whitney invented a life changing invention to clean cotton...incredibly necessary during this time of war, financial ruin and unrest. Both the north and south needed to be clothed.

On a lighter note, I like the story of the Monopoly game. It was invented during the great depression during the 1930's. People dreamed of making it rich in fantasy while in reality people were killing themselves due to incredible stock market crashes.

Here is a man who made it rich in a period of failure because of his ability to fantasize. He didn't need to do anything more productive than to help to change the thinking of a dispairing people though an imaginative game....I'm not sure but was his name Milton Bradley? I could look it up but...you can do that. It could prove interesting. The necessity of daydreaming in the midst of hardship.

If you've ever seen the movie "Apollo 13", there is a scene at NASA where this guy comes into the room, empties a box of stuff on the table and says "This is what they have to work with up there." The engineers then had to use only those items to build a machine that would help the astronauts survive long enough to return to earth. To me, that is the ultimate example of your quote.
