Files with the extension .exe are called executable, because they initiate the execution of a program or computer routine. These kinds of files are extremely common and most are necessary for the operation of the computer or its installed programs.

Each of your programs, such as IE, MS Word, Notepad, any games installed, and so on, have a file with the .exe extension and clicking that will launch the program, although usually they are launched by clicking on the shortcut.

Installation programs are also .exe files, usually, because they execute the installation of the programs.

That is why it is not advisable to open or run .exe files that you get in email - they could in fact execute unwanted programs, however small, that are viruses.

Only use .exe files that you, for example, purchased, or that you have downloaded from a trusted, legitimate site that offers programs you want or need...

A .exe is an executeable file; that could be a reputable program, or a trojan. You need to google to find out what it is. You also need a firewall, an anti virus, an anti spyware and an anti adware on your computer.

You say it has been there since the up dates? If you are talking about Microsoft up dates go back to the Microsoft website and go to troubleshoot and do a search on the name! Peace!
