How do you alter patterns?

I have a few patterns I'm fond of, but my bust is too big, I'd have to alter the pattern. I'd hate to waste the time paying for everything, only to find it can't be done. Advice?

What I have done in the past is cut the pattern where it needs to be increased in size and inserted just plain old paper with some tape. Just be sure where you are cutting before you cut the pattern. If you can, go to a copy place and copy the pieces you plan on cutting. That way you won't ruin the original pattern if you make a mistake. Hope this helps.
