My doctor is giving me mixed signals! I'm a bigger gal, and at 35 weeks along, I have gained only 7 pounds (not sure how many kgs that is!).

In the beginning, my doctor told me that at my weight, I didn't need to gain much during pregnancy, but now she is concerned that I haven't gained enough. When I called her on it, she said that low weight gain needs to be monitored closely to make sure the fetus is growing appropriately. So she has me scheduled with a perinatologist next week for a growth scan (a targeted ultrasound checking for fetal growth).

Whatever!!!

Just don't "diet," eat healthy, take your vitamins. Your doctor shouldn't be UPSET with you! If you're not pregnant yet, this is a good time to find a doctor who has experience with overweight moms-to-be.

Good luck!

Hmm....I imagine if you gave birth to a healthy baby the first time around and had a healthy pregancy with no complications, you'd be alright...

A lot of overweight women have babies are are just fine! The only down side is that overweight women are more prone to having certain complications such as preeclampsia and gestational diabetes.

I'm heavy myself and 13 1/2 weeks pregnant and my doc hasn't said one word about my weight as of yet...however, I've also been losing weight instead of gaining at this point.

I suppose that as long as you eat healthy and make sure you get enough nutrients that losing weight while you are pregnant wouldn't be all that bad...my mother-in-law says she lost 100 pounds when she was pregnant with my husband.

Call your doc and talk to her. If she won't listen to your concerns, it's time to find a new "weight-friendly" doc...

Good luck with your decision!

well you do need to gain weight during your pregnancy, a healthy thin person may me required to gain 40 pounds where as a heavier person may be required to gain only 25. No matter what though you should be gaining weight. I personally think being at a healthy wieght before concieving is best but I think as long as you eat healthy even if you are over weight you should still have a healthy baby

I'm 16 weeks pregnant and I've lost 8 pounds since I first saw my OB 8 weeks ago. Since I'm on the hefty side myself, my doc isn't very concerned. She said as long as the baby is growing and is healthy, that's all that matters.

As far as gaining weight, at your weight, you shouldn't gain any weight until your 5th month, minimum. That's when the you start gaining actual baby weight. When you have a woman who within her wieght range, weight gain is needed to help support the baby. When you already have that weight, you don't need to gain that 1kg a month.

I am not a little girl. I lost 40 lbs with my first and didn't gain any back until my last month. I have lost 15 so far with this one. My doctor is not concerned. I am not dieting, I just have huge food issues when I am pregnant. ( translation: almost everything makes me ill).

Most concerns with heavy women being pregnant is their blood pressure, and their blood sugar. As long as you are healthy in those respects your baby will be fine.

Yes! Never diet when pregnant, don't even worry about it. Once your child is born Breastfeed him/her. Some think its TOOOOOOOO time consuming, but your really helping out your child and yourself at the same time. What you eat (and believe me you will eat) is basically nourishment the baby takes from you anyway. Ask your Dr.
