It is one of three:
Foil, epee or saber. Those are the only 3 blades used in fencing each having their own requirements for use.
The foil is the "beginners" weapon. Points are scored for "hits" to the chest area only.
The epee is the weapon used in the movies for your typical "swordfight". It has a triangular blade and is more rigid then the foil. Points are scored by any "hit" to the torso, excluding arms, legs and head.
The saber is a heavier, slightly curved blade. It is what you see the calvary using in movies. Points are scored by any hit to anywhere on the body except the head.
The head is always off limits and any hit to the head will result in disqualification.

epee
foil
sabre
A foil is the classic fencing sword. It is used by lunging and thrusting and points are scored when the point of the foil hits a vital area in the chest area.
A sabre is a more heavy duty weapon and slashes to any part of the upper body are allowed. Sabres have a larger hand protector as well.
An epee is a smaller sword. I believe it is a smaller version of the foil.
