The value added by their work exceeds the value added by harder working people.
If I produce something that millions of people value, then I will make more money than some one who produces something a few hundred people find valuable. The amount of effort does not enter into the equation.
Say, I am smart in math while a co-worker is not as smart. We both work in a math field. The other person works harder than I do because they find the work more difficult than I do. We get paid the same amount. But, it is fair.

One, they are always in the public eye, 2) they sometimes do 4-6 episodes in a day,3) they wait around alot, on some shows when there is make-up put on, it sometimes takes a good 6 hrs. to do this, then there is more waiting and then there always is the possibility of re-takes, (which no one likes). It takes alot to put on a production, you are dealing with egos' and late actors, But mainly they work at their profession 24/7 they become an character, and study it to a tee. It is very grueling work, whether you are a stage hand, or you are a key person. It really is mind boggling, what they deal with. The hard working person goes in at say 9:00 and works to 5 maybe longer. Where as entertainment people start at 4:00 am and go till the director is satified. And then after all that, they still have to look good for the press or the public. But these are people that have given them-selfs to the public.

Not all people in the entertainment industry get better pay. Also most of the cast and crew of the shows you watch on TV or the movies you see work an average day of 12-15 hours typically. They work very hard, pay a lot to join a union, and usually have no personal life. The big stars make a lot, but many of them starved for years while they were "trying to make it". It is a hard road to stardom, and and easy fall, so they probably try to get as much as they can, while they have the opportunity. And finally, in this day and age, EVERYONE is/are "really hard working people."

Okay, first the entertainment industry includes all kinds of women. Lets take acting as one example. How about all those wonderful actresses that work as character actress. They may not be the "ideal" but they get a lot of meaty parts. Their roles require a depth of understanding of human nature that goes well beyond outside appearances. The same goes for the men. The most memorabile movies are the ones where the actors play complex personalities. It takes talent to do that. Then there are the female directors, writers, and producers. Admittedly, they are not the majority, but their presence is evident more so as time goes by. Personally, my home video collection includes such type of films. One of my favorites is "Fried Green Tomatoes" just to use one example.

because of the names they stand behind-ex. Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise. they dont find a cure for a disease but make more many times more the salary than that of our own President-US President that is! he-the US President- makes half a million and Tom Cruise makes 25 million. also because stupid people actually will pay money to see the movies but also because we the society drive the movie industry!if there was no demand then prices will fall, and also because you have monopoly co.'s such as MGM, Miramax, Columbia, etc.that have a lot of money at their disposal and they can reach a deal with an actor if they want that actor bad enough! we the society are to blame as well as big co.'s as well as the prices on the market of a DVD and so forth. in the music industry i at least think that they deserve it! take Madonna who is 48 and makes $195 million with her last your. why? because she is ******* madonna and she can! she can demand $250 a seat for the best seats and so forth because she has the power here. other bands like U 2 and Colplay I agree with how much they get paid! they write their own songs, etc, play their own instruments, and they are the ones that i am willing to spend $70 a ticket to see. i saw Coldplay in Feb. in concret in Houston and they were fantastic! they never took a break and the whole concert left you spellbound! but there are other people like Nobel Prize winners and so forth who do not make a fraction of the money because they are not a celebrity! once you become a celebrity you call the shots! there are people researching cures for epilepsy, AIDS, alzheimers, and parkinsons who get no attention and the salary is not so great even with school vs. stupic ******* dislexic and idiotic people like Tom Cruise!

Your Best Fiend's answer was good. To paraphrase:
People in entertainment make alot because there is high demand for their services. People pour billions a year into viewing films. Actors are justified to ask for a small chunk of that (even though it looks very big to us).
Also, consider it from a supply perspective. Why does Tiger Woods get paid so much and teachers so little? Because there are millions of teachers but ONE Tiger Woods. Guess who gets valued more?
I agree that it seems unfair at times, but such things are a result of what many other people value.
