Depends on how you want to classify them. There are the three basic rock types: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. Igneous rocks can be classified as extrusive or intrusive. Intrusive rocks can be any number of rock types including granite, diorite, gabbro. Extrusive rockcs can be basaltic, rhyolitic, andesitic, dacitic.

Sedimentary rocks: there are precipitated rocks like travertine and there are clastic rocks like sandstone.

Metamorphic rocks can be classified by the rock they start out as or by the process that cases their metamorphosis. Slate, for example is metamorphosed shale. Marble is metamorphose limestone. Serpentinite is altered basalt. Metamorphism occurs in environments of high temperature and low pressure (skarn), high temperature and high pressure (greenshist), low temperature and high pressure (gneiss), and low temperature and low pressure (can't think of a good example).

So the answer to your question ranges from 3 to millions.

The answer is three: Igneous, Metamorphic, and Sedimentary.

(For those that answered basaltic -- that is just one type of igneous rock.)
