Just sit down and start writing. You have to take that step. Don't think about how long it will be, how long it will take, just start it. One word at a time.

Don't worry whether what you write is good or not, just dump out all the ideas and storyline you can think of. Once you have that, go back and think about what the main line of the story is (sometimes you won't know that until you do the first draft). Figure out who's story (who the narrator needs to be) it is. See if you can put different spins on the plotline. Turn things upside down and try them from different directions.

Now rewrite the whole thing. Then read the book to yourself and see what it needs, where it is rough, where it drags and correct it. Repeat until you have something you feel is good enough to send out. The look for a book publisher (like in Writer's Market) and send the manuscript out.

To write a book, you have to sit down and write. Once you have words you can correct and improve and make it into a book worth reading. It's ok to have crap to begin with--- writing is rewriting. Just write.

There are millions of wonderful books that are never written because the author was too scared to try. Sit down and write.

It can be a good idea to start with a synopsis. Write just a one or two page story that you will eventually make into the book. Chances are the story will change along the way, but it'll give you an idea where you want to be going.
Also, write, write, write. Write every day. Your subject will form itself as you write about it. It's a lot of work. Don't get discouraged.

Try to come up with a new main character for your story (something a little out of character for you - something not tackled before). Write down a description - male, female, eye color, etc. etc.

Then take this character and imagine then in some odd place or scenario – anything goes! Write down ideas on what would have to happen to your character or how they would react to the scenario you placed them in.

You can do this for multiple characters if you like.

This may seem futile, but it will help you flesh out some characters and give you insight into what you may want to happen to this type of character in a potential story. You may even come up with multiple story lines!

Strong well crafted main characters can inspire readers to love your story as well as drive you to write a great story for these imagined beings so be in! :-)

Start with "Once upon a time" for a fairy tale with a happy ending or try "It was a dark and doomy night" for a thriller or suspense novel.

Try this opening sentence:

"It was bad enough I had to shoot Nick to keep him quiet, but then the air conditioning went out."
