Each time the unwelcome thoughts come into your mind, encase them in a big bubble and visualise them floating away. Sounds corny, but it does work.
I also found that practising Transcendental Meditation helped, but that's a very expensive way of doing it!

I believe the best "technique" is to do that which is natural and effective. This takes a level of acceptance of concepts that not everyone is capable of accepting.
Life is, as Shakespeare said, a play, and we are all players on the stage of life. Events occur to us as the close of a Karmic account. That is, we receive the results of what we previously did, and if one can accept this concept, then one can "accept" the event as due one, and forgiver and forget. Otherwise one can dwell upon the event and perhaps even generate another Karmic due bill for collection in some later life?
To live in the now is to live in the very moment one is living...not to keep ones attention stuck on an event that is gone. To do that one cannot possibly live in the now. One is living in the then...and going round and round in ones brain is the event replaying and replaying itself. And this digs a grove that only Karma can fill.
Peace

Today is all we have and right now our only guarantee...
Don't dwell on the past, you will never forget the things that happened, but you can learn from them. Tragic things happen to people everyday, and whatever your religious beliefs may be...it all comes down to prioritizing events in your mind.
You cannot change the past, but you can make today a good day.
I have a friend whose brother comitted suicide about 2 years ago...he has a hard time dealing with it. I try to tell him and teach him that there is so much more in his life to live for now...he has 2 young children for which he needs to be a good dad, and a rocky marriage which he needs to work on. His brother is not coming back, no matter what...so he needs to try to focus on the things that he can take care of instead of dewlling on his brother's death.

I really wish there was. I know that when you go through something really traumatic you block this experience out of your mind. But I don't think you can choose the things you would like to forget. Again I wish this was possible.

You may never forget them, but you can learn from them, and accept the fact that you cannot change the past. Instead of wasting time and energy on the past which cannot be changed...do things to improve your present and future

You learn forgivness...
God didn't tell us to forgive only for the benefit of those you forgive. He told us to forgive because it releases us from our own prison and the control that you allow anyone else to have over your heart and mind and life in the act of unforgivness. Holding on to anger and rage and sh*it, basically hurts no one BUT you! The people you are mad at, generally could give a sh*it what you think or feel. And spending an otherwise peacefull moment or decade or lifetime trying to figure out why that is, is a wasted effort.
To forget, you chose to forgive and decide not to allow anyone to have that kind of power over you!
Remember in the law of energy transference, you have to remember that the energy behind every thought we possess has no sex, no form, no shape, it is pure potential and we attribute and assign it to things and faces and places. It takes just as much energy to hate as it does to love. Just as much energy to forgive as it does to hold a grudge. Use your all powerful noodle and decide for yourself what your brain is going to do with that potential energy. Don't allow yourself to believe that your brain has the the ability to control you. You control it! You decide to forgive!
He (God) is pretty smart like that you know... ?

try to stay "in the moment"
when your mind starts to wander back to that dark place, just do something else. Watch tv, read a book, do a crossword puzzle.
Keep your mind occupied.
Time heals..
