Many such superstitions are partially founded upon some logic, and this is a good example. Most rooms in England, where umbrellas originated, are not large enough to comfortably accomodate one, so people would often knock things over and/or break things. This was attributed to bad luck.

When you have an umbrella open indoors, you have more of a tendency to to hit other things and knock stuff over...it makes for bulk and blind spots, hence causing some chaos.

It's an umbrella. It is not considered unlucky.

My mom grew up in the depression, and she always said the reason is you are acting as if your roof leaks! But that's putting it up over your head, of course, not merely opening it so it can dry out.

I suppose 'cos at some point someone had their eye poked as there's not as much space indoors!

I didn't know it was, I always thought my mom didn't want me to do it so I wouldn't knock a bunch of stuff over.
