Arithmetic or algebra problems solving ?

I give you some examples.

1) Arithmetic problem solving.

Ted buy tree T-shirt for 5$ each. He also buy a pair of pant for 40$. Ted pay the bill with 100$. How many dollars the cashier
give him ?

Solution: 5$ X 3 T-shirt = 15$
1 pant = 40$

So, the total of the bill will be : 15$ + 40$ = 55$

100$ - 55$ = 45$ (money back )

Final answer : Ted will receive 45$

2) Algebra problem solving

Paul is Mary's brother. The total of their ages is 30 years.
In 15 years in the future, the Mary's age will be 25 years.
Find the actual age of Paul

Solution: Put X = actual age of Paul
Y = actual age of Mary
X+ Y = total ages
Y + 15 = 25

We have to solve these X + Y = 30 (1)
equations system: Y + 15 = 25 (2)

By substitution: (2) => Y = 25 -15 = 10 (3)

(3) => (1) X + 10 = 30
X = 20

Answer: The Actual age of Paul is 20 years old.

First start out by writing down all the values that are given to you;
next, figure out what you are looking to solve and create a letter for it (like "x" or "x" and "y" if you have two unknowns);
third, write out the formula that is associated with your problem (something like a^2 + b^2 = c^2 for an example);
fourth, plug in all the knowns and solve for the unknown;
and lastly, don't forget to plug in the numbers and see if they make sense when you have an answer (and verify that your units are correct).

If you are unsure if something goes on the bottom or top, you can always look at the units to get a clue whether you need to divide or multiply to get the units you want. Of course you have to study and know something about the level of math you are being tested on.

Good luck!!

Note the following acronymn: OODA

Observe what is being asked in a problem (read directions)

Orientate yourself with what is given.

Decide on a course of action.

Act on your decision. If this doesn't work, go back to orientate...
