I have only visited my GP three times in two years, for what I considered to be for a real health problem. Each time that I have been I have been fobbed off and made to feel like a fraud. Is it just a funding thing, that they wont refer you on. How ill do you have to be? My existing health problems still have not gone away. Do you think I should change Doctors or are they all the same?

I don't think mine is rude, just bloody arrogant, like, what are you wasting my time for, just take this prescription and leave

I think that there are many, many doctors who act like this. Part of the reason may be that with managed care they have to see so many people to earn what they once earned that they end up not giving really personal service. That said, there is no excuse for rudeness. I would do one of two things: A) Change doctors and if you can't do that B) Confront him about his rudeness and ask him if it is something that he does with just you or is he rude and arrogant to all of his patients. Stick with "I" statements, don't say it the way that I just did. Yes, it is typically funding that causes them not to refer. Presumably you have an HMO. If you do, it may be one where the docs get a bonus for not referring a patient on (the fewer they have to reefer, the bigger the bonus from the HMO). A terrible policy, but one that still exists. If you have PPO as an option from your employer, change to it at your next open enrollment if you can afford to do so. Also, the squeaky wheel gets the grease, if you cost him more trouble than the bonus he gets for not referring you then he may refer you on to the specialist. Good luck!

I find mine very rude. He kind of tries to act superior and he never really has too much time, even if you have only been in for two minutes, and he's always quite a bit late, because he is so busy and important..... He also lied right in my face after having completely messed up my insurance claim.

As if I'm not paying his overblown salary.

Anyway, some time ago I started looking after my health preventatively and have never had to see him again. If I ever have to, I'll ask for another doctor - surelly they can't be all the same.

I have a brilliant Doctor and the Reception staff are every bit as special. I have been refer ed to specialists quite a few times and i am awaiting 2 op's. I really can not find fault at all. I think you should try talking to the practise nurse to find out if your treatment from the Doctor is normal ? She will help you and maybe try a different Doc within the same practise. Whatever the reason, you should not be uncomfortable with the service you are given. Good luck................

My GP is really kind - he is older and listens to what you have to say. However I recently had to go for a medication check-up when my GP was away and I saw a junior partner who thinks he is God's gift to women, a real know-it-all who talks down at you as if we are all idiots because we are not doctors. I think you should try and see a different doctor if you can as we all pay enough in NHS contributions not to have to put up with bad service.

I have to agree with the other answerers -- if you're not pleased with your doctor, find a new one! Your health is way too important for someone you pay to take care of it to not take seriously! Some doctors have God complexes, it's true. I work in a medical school, and some of our docs (not many, but a few) act like everyone should worship the ground they walk on.

I've been very blessed to have some great doctors in my lifetime. It may take you a few tries to find a doc you're satisfied with, but keep trying! Ask friends and family members about their doctors and see if they can recommend someone. Also try asking coworkers.

Good luck with your search.

Change Doctors. I've had a rude doctor before, and it's very vexing! A problem I don't have is being blown off. I will take the time to ask anything I want to ask, and get them answered. You've made an appointment, you aren't there to waste time, and you want your concerns addressed. Be polite but forceful.
But the easiest thing to do is say goodbye to that jerky doc, and find one you're comfortable with.

My doctor is a woman and she is very attentive to me. She spends time talking to me when I come in with a medical problem. I went in last month for my annual physical and she spent 15 minutes talking to me so I would feel at ease when the exam started. Then she did the exam and was very gentle and told me everything she was doing or going to do. So no I would say change doctors. They are not all the same. I wouldn't change my doctor for any other.

I went to my doctor 8 weeks ago, but before I went I used the Internet to get the information I needed (NHS24).

I told the doctor what I thought was wrong, when she made her suggestion, I told her (in a very apologetic manner) that I had looked on the Internet and discovered the best treatment was surgery and told her that's what I wanted. She gave me a form then and there to go for an xRay. I now have my date for surgery (Monday 23 Oct).

Sometimes we just need to be more assertive and let the doctors know that they are not dealing with imbeciles.

Go with your gut. If you feel fobbed off, tell the Dr. If that doesn't work, seek a new Dr. Its your health & your body. They are getting paid good money to provide you with a service. You have patient rights. Report all your dissatisfactions (workers, physicians, lack of care, difficulty to get appts, etc) to your health insurance company. Drs don't like bad report cards!
