There are 4 types of headaches. Tension, Sinus, Migraine and cluster. Tension headaches are responsible for up to 90% of headaches.
Usually a tension headache will start in the back of the head and work it's way forward. If the muscles in the neck or the head are really tense, you will get a headache.
If the headache is in your face and throbs, it is probably a migraine. Though, there many other symptoms that go along with a migraine such as nausea, sensitivity to light and sound.
A sinus headache can feel similar to a migraine. One way to tell is if it is a a sinus headache is to lean your head forward...if you feel pressure/pain in your face and it makes the headache worse, then this is the cause.
A cluster headache is said to be worse than a migraine and is generally in one specific area of the head. Cluster headaches are the least common.
My guess is that your headache is a tension headache. Try ice and heat therapy to relax the muscles in your neck. A pinched nerve in the neck would be responsible for sharp, shooting pains, if you are having them.
Though, to be sure see your doctor. I hope this helps.

No, there are many many types of headaches. There are many many types of migraines. (I have two types of migraines, I should know!) When you are getting a tension headache, you'll feel the tension in your neck first, usually. Then you'll have the headache. A good way to relieve a tension headache is some sort of relaxation technique. If you haven't had your headaches formally diagnosed, do that ASAP. You need to get them managed by a doc, even if they are infrequent. That way you will know the best way to prevent them and get rid of them the next time you have one.

It doesn't necessarily mean that it's a migraine just because it's on one side of your head.
Have you ever been in any car accidents?
It could be a long term effect of that.
However, if you haven't been in a car accident, then it could be a migraine, could be tension, could be TMJ, could be nerve pain too.
You need to see a doctor and have him run some tests. Maybe get an MRI done, if that's possible.
Do you have high blood pressure? It might be that also. Could be a pinched nerve too.
So you see, it could be a number of things. If migraines run in your family then that's probably it. They are hereditary.
Hope you feel better.

Have you considered the fact that you may need glasses and that the headaches are due to excessive eye strain. That may be the problem. when you feel a like tinkle in the temple area you should if you can lay down for a few moments with your eyes closed and see if the headache goes away. If it continues to get worse you might have to see a doctor to see if you are having headaches for other medical reasons.
