1. Ponyboy's relationship with Darry is different with Sodapop. Sodapop is more fun, a friend, and a fooling around. He is one that Ponyboy can trust.
His relation ship with Darry is kind of distant. Darry acts like the parent, and is too overprotective over Ponyboy. For example, Darry wouldn't let Ponyboy fight in the rumble, and yelled at Ponyboy when he came home to late causing Ponyboy to do things that are the impetus to others in the book.
2. The difference between Socs and Greasers are that Socs are rich snobs, who get everything they want. They pick on the greasers because they want to make themselves feel better. They basicly have no rules. Greasers have the more wild life. Greasers have long greasy hair and they wear long t-shirts and jeans. They are all in gangs and live in the poorer side of the neighborhood.

Ponyboy and Darry have a more father/son relationship. Darry had to take over the role as father when their parents died. I think that he wants to give Ponyboy more of a direction and be a role model rather then a friend (which Sodapop is). Soda's closer in age to Ponyboy and I think that he can relate better.

Greaser and Soc's mainly differ by money. The socs are the "rich kids" and the greasers are considered white trash with greasy hair. But whether they are greasers or socs, they all go through the same thing with friends and family. They are actually more similar than they realize.

I read the book back in the 7th grade and to tell you the truth, I'm 30 now and I dont remember the first chapter too well. Rent the movie. It is one of my favorite movies...but be prepared to cry. Good luck with the homework!

With Sodapop, Ponyboy is free to have a more brotherly relationship and joke around with him. Ponyboy knows that Soda cares about him. With Darry it's different. Since their parents were killed, Darry has to play an almost fatherly role with Ponyboy. He's not as much of a brotherly figure as he should be.

Socs are the rich kids who always get what they want from their parents. Greasers are the kids from the wrong side of town who have to work for what they want.

As for what I'd call the first chapter, I don't remember that very well. I know it introduced and described the characters... it's been a while since I read the book.

As I walked out of the darkness of the movie theater, I only had 2 things on my mind. Paul Newman and a ride home.

This is one of the best teen angst books ever written. Take the time to read it. I haven't opened that book in at least 20 years and I can still recite the first paragraph.

You really shoud do your own homework. The movie is out though and that sticks pretty close to the book.
