Yes, there will be new CPUs by Jan 2007. Right now, the fastest chip is the Intel Core 2 EX6800 (commonly referred to as the "Conroe" chip). If you follow the link below, this website always rates the best hardware and tells you what CPU's work the best for different types of software. Intel is working on a QUAD CORE CPU which should be coming out soon. That's right... 4 cpu cores instead of 2. Yes, it will be incredibly fast. The quad cores ARE coming out this year, I don't know why everyone says they aren't, they are, from both companies, Intel and AMD. Anyway the Core 2 Extreme is the fastest right now, but yes there will be quad cores by Jan 2007. Whether you want one or not, that is up to you.

The fasting PC CPUs on the market right now is the Intel's Core 2 Duo. Intel plans on releasing 4 logical core CPUs compared to the current 2 in the Core 2 Duo. However they are going to be very expensive upon release and probably won't be out by January 2007.
You are safe in purchasing a new PC today.
Core 2 Duo prices:
E6300 (1.86 GHz, 2MB cache, $210), E6400 (2.13 GHz, 2MB, $230), E6600 (2.40 GHz, 4MB, $315) and E6700 (2.67 GHz, 1066 MHz, 4MB, $529)
