if it's a charcoal bar b q, light the coals with the grill in place. Take a wire long handled brush and scrub the rack while the grill is hot.

Since we prefer the taste & smell of a charcoal BBQ I can only answer for that. We use DAWN POWER DISOLVER on ALL of it. To clean the grill between BBQs & after the season before we put it up. For the grill we just take it in the kitchen spray it good, let it set then just use a scotch brite pad to rub it off while rinsing in hot water.
For the actual BBQ, at the end of the season, we take it out, spray it off to get the ashes & stuff off. Then we spray it down with the DAWN POWER DISOLVER & let it sit. Then we use the scotch brite pad to work off the worst & rinse it with hot water from a bucket. If the BBQ or grill are really bad you may have to repeat this, but it works real well for us....

If it's a gas grill...turn it on high and let it burn the stuff off. If it's charcoal, you can buy cleaners at hardware stores or Home Depot/Lowe's.
