I suspect you have mistaken the motive. To be afraid of the world, you would have to be able to find it on a map. Which most Americans cannot do.
In other words, to be afraid they would first have to care. At least a little bit.
And the simple fact of the matter is that most Americans couldn't care less what goes on in their own country (look at the voter turnout rates) much less what happens elsewhere.
So their leaders pretty much do whatever they like, which sometimes means imperialist attempts to dominate percieved enemies, and other times means trying to be friends with hundreds of disparate interests around the world.

Americans don't fear the rest of the world. However, there does seem to be a type of odd craziness here, which I think can mostly be attributed to our loathsome politicians and their greed, and a constant bombardement of fear based news. Of course, many of us are just plain selfish. Now... who the hell ever mentions the other side of the story? How many other countries help the world as much as the USA? None! We are everywhere trying to help the poor, the sick, the destitute, etc.. etc.. etc.. Where is the thank you from the other countries of the world that just look to bleed us dry?

Ever heard of stereotyping??? You're saying every single American is terrified of the rest of the world? The only thing that is alarming is how you could possibly believe your post!

We are a country run by isolationists and Souther Baptists - yes, our leadership and most of the sheep who follow them and get them elected are scared to death of the outside world.
My wife and I would like to take our children and go live in the South of France. If I could speak the language and could get a job there, don't think I wouldn't do so in a heart beat.
I can't wait until the next administration comes in to try to right the wrongs inflicted upon the world by our current administration. America has been a really screwed up place to live since January, 2000.

No we're not afraid......we don't like to be polluted by what you Europeans call sophistication? *shrug* if being A-moral is sophistication you can count me out.....and if you're referring to the middle east conflict well they DID crash 2 Boeing 747's into one of the worlds tallest buildings. Now imagine if you're one of the Americana's that was on the plane? That would have been quite terrifying don't you think and to think that it could have happened to anyone of us that day.....that's a little disheartening.
NE way.......YOU JUST DON'T ATTACK THE UNITED STATES! We are thee largest power in the world and there's a sense of security that comes along with that. We never thought that anyone would have enough balls to attach us again especially after what we did to Japan in WWII. In my opinion the Arabs got off damned easy compared to what we COULD have done! Don't you think? So as for scared...nah....causious is a better word b/c you really don't want to piss off will release all hell on you.
In afterthought, maybe we are scared....scared of what we can do to another country if they really piss off royally......we can blow you off the frickin' map! Really now I would like to think we are a bit beyond that and more mature as a country....see how we handle the Middle East...with kid gloves! :)
