Not so much - the area right around the Galleria itself is pretty iffy. I used to live in some apartments on a street that runs basically between the Galleria and Valley View, and now I'm not sure I would even visit anyone who lived there! Like someone else said, though, Addison is fine. I personally hate it, but it seems fairly safe, and there certainly are lots of places to eat (if you like chain restaurants).
But if you ask me, and you want something less "plastic" than North Dallas/Addison, Lake Highlands would be a better choice - it's farther east, but if you live in "new" Lake Highlands (north of Northwest Highway) you're in Richardson schools, which some people consider "better," and the homes are somewhat newer than they are farther south (built in the '70s-'80s). South of Northwest Highway, pretty far east of Skillman/Abrams (but before you get to LBJ) is nice, too; if you buy, the taxes are way cheaper (Dallas schools; most homes were built in '60s-'70s). Apartments in that part of town can be kind of iffy, though.

Yes - the area around the Galleria is very nice, but not terribly far north. It does have a lot of traffic, though, so be prepared for that.

The area around the Galleria is getting a facelift, but just down the street is a bad area. I would suggest Plano or Ricardson. Richardson is ranked as having one of the best school districts and Plano is growing larger every day.

Off North Central Expwy in Richardson is nicer. But Greenville is quite a distance away. It depends on which direction you are traveling and what time you want to end up there
