Get a deep bucket (a one gallon sized works very well!). Line it with a blanket, old towel, or bedding material from his cage (you want at least 2 inches of bedding in there to cushion his fall). Put in some really smelly food (fruit works very well for this...they can smell that from the other side of the house a lot of the time!). You'll need something for a ramp (or steps) books stacked up, a board leading up to the egde of the bucket--anything that will allow him to get to the fruit in the bucket). Leave this overnight in the room you think he would most likely be in (if there are a few possibilities, set up 2--one on both ends of the house). Check in the morning, and you will most likely have found your little buddy. If he's still not to be found, replace the fruit with fresh pieces, and check on it every hour or so.

look behind everything and under anything if there is a hole in the wall chances are the gerbils in it they like warm and enclosed areas so look in those spots sometimes they'll be in couches yes IN them then you can leave food by the hole and if there hungry enough they'll come out or you may just smell something and then you'll find the culprit

First of all.....Good luck.
I had this happen to me as well, but my gerbil was hungry and went home on his own. (as well as he crawled across me during the night, scared me, so I threw the blankets over him, like a net and JUMPED out of bed-but he got away) Food is the only thing that lure him, and you will have to set a trap accordingly.
Again, I say GOOD LUCK!
