Could well be your timing needs adjusted so that it ticks over at higher revs when at idle.
If it is not that it could be something more serious like a cylinder head problem causing your engine to lose compression. Best take it to a qualified mechanic to get it checked out.

You said it yourself this child's mother just had a baby. Sometimes in the midsts of these types of events we forget things like paying the electric bill. Obviously the child wasn't being bothered by the fact that there weren't any lights (frankly we all should take a break from all of the electronic devices that clutter our lives). This can be an oppritunity for his family to come closer as a family with no television, computers or video game systems. Goodness it just MIGHT bring back the art of conversation in the family!

the common problems on your car is the throttle plate is binding cause by carbon deposit build up ,cracked intake air tube(cause vacuum leak),and bad idle speed control valve(binding)
