Was that a central slave-trading post or was it just by chance or how did that occur?

Is there any reason so many rappers come out of Atlanta?

When the South freed their slaves, the whites felt they were not needed: they had new machinery to replace slave labor, whites were now competiting with blacks for jobs, and white communities still had institutionalized racism that was backed by their church communities. Blacks were threatened, denied jobs, and hunted down and killed. To survive, blacks had to band together and form their own communities! There had to be some place where they could form a large and safe community to fend off racist threats.

Atlanta, in welcoming blacks, found a way to rebuild itself after being razed in the Civil War. By being a more open community, Atlanta also provided itself with greater economic opportunities than the rest of Georgia and its more closed and racist communities because more people could trade and work there. As a result, Atlanta became an economic powerhouse of the South while the rest festered. The relative economic prosperity of Atlanta added to it's attraction of all people of open minds.

Atlanta also became a center for the civil rights movement 100 years later. Civil rights groups had major offices located in Atlanta, again because it was a a safe haven from more direct attacks.

Rap is tied to ethnic identity for many blacks, such that it is not so much the presence of rap as the presence of the black community there that generates rappers. Rap draws its own roots from poetry and the beat generation and became its own poetic way of venting anger at and discussing black history. Rap was originally more original and honestly political. It's hard today to make that link because of the corporate sexualization and blandification of the genre. What you see on the market is not the real rap, but the garbage that sells to white middle class boys. That's why it's such a surprise that black communities produce so many rappers today: you'd expect there to be more preppy white boys rapping, considering the majority audience. It also explains though why the genre has become so bland and obnoxious: stuff to annoy white boys' parents today just isn't the same as what annoyed white boys' parents 20 years ago.

actually Atlanta was one of the first southern cities that accepted blacks after slavery, to have their own businesses, homes, restaurants, etc..... its the capital of the South, just like New York City is the capital of the north.....

You're welcome..... and I honestly did NOT think you were being racist.. thats a good question actually.... some people are just way too overly senstitive......

You said it. It's sad but true. Once upon a time there were a lot of slaves in Georgia.
