I will be working for a VP who is known for constantly changing travel arrangements, re-scheduling meetings several times and basically making everyone he interacts with schedule around his schedule. You know the type constantly has cell phone stuck to ear and schedules several things in one day (despite the fact you’ve told him). Any useful suggestion on how to manage this boss? Before you ask why.. it’s a big jump in pay for me.

Obviously he is my boss, but part of my job requirement is to help him better organize and manage his schedule. In short “they” want me to help reign him in.

He is YOUR BOSS he is in charge and you're not. End of discussion, or quit.

Welcom to the world of being an executive assistant! You just described every executive vp in my office.
I started my job thinking that I was going to get my boss in line - get him to meetings on time, make sure he was caught up with his paperwork, filing, etc.
Well, I had to let go of that idea really fast. My advice to you is:
Smile always
Be flexible
Your boss is THE MOST IMPORTANT GUY (OR GAL) IN THE OFFICE (even if they aren't)
Fight for your boss - stand up for him - make him right
When he changes that flight to New York for the twentieth time, you just smile and say sure - can I get you something else?
If you want more advice you can contact me. Just let me know and I'll get you my email.
When you're starting - be VERY patient with yourself. It is not easy to do this work and we're very underappreciated.
Good luck big time!
FP

Training the boss is the key here.
If you are well organized and he is not you will become very valuable very quickly. You should be able to get to the point where all schedules go through you and you keep him on track.
A five minute meeting daily on schedule updates and staying one step ahead of him will keep him organized and you will hopefully be appreciated. Keep a running calendar that you provide him daily and outhinking a disorganized boss is very easy. My assistant does it daily and does it well.

May be with your help, he does not need to revise his plans anymore ;=)
Or you just have to deal with it because the more important the boss is, the more change of plans there will be.
Think of the Big Pay Check and smile.

Try to see how he functions and see if there are any suggestions you can make to help him (and you) streamline. Does he have a blackberry? Utilize outlook? Have a calendar that he refers to? It might be worth suggesting such things if he does not...
Good luck - trying to get a senior manager to change his ways is pretty difficult!

You must remember that he is the boss, not you. He is entitled to do whatever he wants, whether or not he is being polite. Who knows, maybe one day you will be just like he is. Either live with it or leave, I guess. That's all you can do!

find another job and quit. He/she is a VP there, don't try to ice skate up hill, just leave.
