An epidemic is defined as any elevated incidence of a particular disease that is above the typically expected incidence (endemic rate) for the region. For example, if you have an endemic rate of syphilis that's 8 cases per year in a city, but suddenly see 20 cases, you have an epidemic.

A pandemic is an epidemic that has become geographically widespread.

btw, not all epidemics are common source! we can say that diabetes type 2 is epidemic because rates are far above "normal" right now. however, you can't say that all those diabetics ate from the same bag of fatty chips. implying that all epidemics are from a common source also does not really account for secondary and tertiary ... etc. cases.

Epidemic = the occurrence in a community or region of an illness , clearly in excess of normal expectancy, which is derived from a COMMON source

Pandemic = a worldwide epidemic
