About $3.-- per gram
It was widely used in the 60's for making transistors, but then it was discovered that silicon is cheaper, and that it makes transistors with more favourable parameters.

Bananas are often touted as being a source of potassium. It's their permanence that's a problem. Some metals are easy: copper - wire iron in lots of forms lead - fishing sinkers silver - jewelry, coins platinum - expensive jewelry chromium - a car bumper or other car part nickel - coin zinc - galvanized coating on iron germanium - diode silicon - diode oxygen - a bottle of air nitrogen - a bottle of air neon - a "neon" sign. Also source for other inert gases .... and the list goes on.... you could do this all day ============ Follow up ============ "Soil" as a source of silicon??? The mineral quartz which also is common in sand contains Si as SiO2, but the dirt in your back yard won't have much Si in it, particularly not in the elemental form. But a silicon diode does contain the element silicon and you can get one at Radio Shack. Ditto for the element germainum. Oh, and a smoke detector contains the element americium.
