I am in canada and have a rear facing infant car seat which is for children up to a year old (or up to 22 pounds)...my daughter is 5 months old and 19 pounds...my question is once she hits 22 pounds is there another car seat I can buy for that weight to be a rear facing car seat or do I just get her a regular car seat and let her face forward?? Someone told me they had to be in a rear facing car seat at least till their one, but every rear facing I have seen says up to 22 or 25 pounds. Even convertible ones say rear facing up to 22 pounds...front facing 22 to 40 and booster 40 to 80 pounds....Anyone know anything about this??

I am a CPS Tech in the state of Wisconsin. I know for a fact the Graco Comfortsport Convertible car seat goes rear facing until 30 lbs. You could also go with a Britax brand, which are more costly, but those rear face from 30-45 lbs depending on the east. Also, the Evenflo Triumph car seat rear faces until 30 lbs also. It is safest in every situation to keep your child rear facing as long as possible. Any baby store or even online at department stores should carry one or more of the car seats mentioned. Good Luck!

I've had both types. The one you secure with a belt is a real pain. You are clambering into the car and trying to secure the belt around the seat - then checking it. This is NO fun when it's raining (which it is always doing here in the UK) I now have the one with a base. The base is an iso fix one and is in the car all the time. I put baby in his seat in the house, take him out, put the seat on the base and 'click'. Job done. There is a lot less scope for incorrect fitting with the latter - especially if the base is isofix and it flags up a 'green window' to show the base is properly in. You ask about safety - both types are safe if fitted right but something like 75% of people fit the ones with belts wrong. Additioanlly, the maxi-cosi car seat will fit on the Quinny range of push chairs. This means that you can take the seat out and clip it straight on the chassis and off you go.

My convertible seat has a weight limit rear facing of 30 lbs, it's a Evenflo Tribute V. I've had it for a couple of years so I'm not for sure that they still make it, but they should have one similar. Then as soon as she turns 1 year and is at least 20 pounds you can turn it around until she is 40 pounds and 40 inches tall.

They make convertible seats that go to different sizes. With a convertible seat you can still have your child facing the rear of the car even after they go past the 22 weight mark. Look into the Fisher Price car seats(these are made by Britax) they are less pricey then the Britax brand.

My son is about the same age and size, and I am in the process of purchasing a new car seat for him. You should get a convertible seat which can be used for infants and toddlers. The seat that I'm getting is the Britax Decathalon which is very well rated and can accommodate children up to 65 pounds. Try www.elitecarseats.com for a great selection of convertible car seats. You should also check out www.carseatdata.org.

I dont know, my daughter was in an infant seat until she grew out of it, then we got a convertible seat and left her face the back until she was 1, even though her weight was a few pounds more. I think keep your baby facing the rear until it is both 22 lbs and 1 yr old. Buy a convertible now, we have a graco model, then turn him/her around on their birthday. A few pounds wont make a difference on the effectiveness of the carseat, its safest to keep them facing the back.

It is said that u have to keep them rear facing until they are one. But many parents turn them around once they are over 22 pounds. It more of a safety matter that they prefer them rear facing. I would get the comvertible and install it instead of the infant seat...Most children by time they are 9 months have gotten too long to sit rear facing.
