This is primarily based on spending 2 weeks in Portugal - not sure I got an accurate view of the culture, but happy to share my opinions.
First thing that comes to mind - grilled sardines - they were everywhere. I finally broke down and tried some and they were delightful, although the skin does have a strong odor that can be hard to wash off ones hands. Second thing - each town seemed to have its own special wine - red, white, vinho verde and the area around Estremadura (sp) made the most wonderful dessert wine I have ever tasted. While I speak Spanish, it was not useful there, but frankly I didn't need to speak the language. The people were so very friendly, especially in the smaller towns, that communicating was actually quite easy.
The culture that I saw indicated strong religious beliefs and a strong sense of family. What's not to love about that?

Which you would be greater effective for somebody who needs to be a diplomat? i could say french Which one is greater effective for an wide-unfold American? i do no longer understand, i'm french Which one is way less complicated to check (because of the undeniable fact that I already understand English and German if that helps in any respect)? i do no longer understand sufficient portuguese to respond to, yet i can inform you that the vocabulary similarities between english and french are extensive (german is ineffective here) Which one has the least distinctive dialects? Like can Brazilian, African, and Continental Portuguese comprehend one yet another? What approximately Canadian, African, and Continental French? canadian french and ecu french (France, Belgium, Switzerland..) are intelligible. There are differencies (accents etc..) between France french, Belgium french etc... even with the undeniable fact that that's no longer something whilst in comparison with Québécois. For African, that's comprehensible whilst on an identical time because it did no longer become a creole. What languages are on an identical time intelligible with them? for french, i could say no one. for portuguese, i think it shares a good style of similarities with spanish, the verbal exchange is rather consumer-friendly (relies upon if that's ecu or brazilian..) Which language sounds nicer? i can't inform you, I communicate french; yet i like portuguese Which has the main close by audio device? standard audio device? portuguese in the two case i think of. notwithstanding if i think of there a good style of french speaker as a 2d language and of direction...which you will I study? the single you prefer. standard, notwithstanding the single you're taking, study the different isn't that tricky.

( I think I can predict the answer , mind!)
To be fair I was in Lisbon in 1968 and it is a beautiful city. The Portuguese are laid back, cultured and interesting.

outrageously friendly to foreigners (despite the first post, sorry to hear about that)
endlessly forgiving of Brazilians, who snigger about them constantly
nevertheless, proud and don't like taking cr@p from anyone.
I don't know of any real downsides in general. Cristian Ronaldo is a kid footballer - that's where he gets his behaviour from, it's not a portuguese thing.
