MY 1985 FORD THUNDERBIRD GOES DEAD EVERYTIME I STOP AT A RED-LIGHT, OR A STOP-SIGN, OR EVEN IF I AM JUST DRIVING SLOWLY OR ATTEMPTING TO STOP. THIS CAR WAS BOUGHT NEW IN 85 BY MY AUNT WHO WAS THE ONLY OWNER UNTIL SHE GAVE IT TO ME. (IT'S NOT MY PRIMARY CAR, I JUST WANTED TO KEEP IT AND FIX IT UP.)IT ONLY HAS 50,000 MILES ON IT. A LOT OF WORK AND MONEY HAS WENT INTO THE CAR. OVER THE SUMMER, I HAD A NEW MOTOR PUT IN. MOST OF THE CAR HAS REPLACED AND NEW PARTS. HOWEVER, IT HAS BEEN IN AND OUT OF NUMEROUS SHOPS B/C OF IT GOING DEAD. AND BELIEVE ME, IT WOULD GO DEAD AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY IT HAD; EVERYTIME I WOULD STOP AT STOP-SIGN, RED-LIGHT,EVERYTIME I GOT BEHIND A SLOW CAR, EVERY SINGLE TIME IT WOULD DIE, EVEN WHEN I DROVE AT A SLOWER SPEED. SOME OF THE MOST TRUSTED MECHANICS HAVE RETURNED IT TO ME "FIXED", ONLY 4 ME 2 DRIVE A FEW MILES & IT WOULD DIE AGAIN. I TOOK IT TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT HOOKED UP TO A MACHINE, THEY SAID NOTHING IS WRONG AND THEN SCRATCHED THEIR HEADS. ????

TO ANSWER SOME OF THESE ?'S, IT IS FUEL INJECTED, ITS A REBUILT ENGINE, IT GOES DEAD ON LEVEL GROUND AND EASILY STARTS BACK UP, AS SOON AS IT STARTS AGAIN IF U DONT PUSH ON THE GAS PEDAL REALLY HARD, IT WILL DIE AGAIN. AND WILL DIE OVER AND OVER UNTIL U DO PUSH IT DOWN HARD. THEN DIE AGAIN AS SOON AS U SLOW DOWN OR STOP.

Take it to a transmission place, tell them you have a bad solenoid that will not allow you car to stop. When you slow down or stop you car a solenoid in the tranny kicks into neutral until the torque converter increases its speed. This will cost 250-350 dollars depending on your mechanic. This happened to me before and I got lucky and someone knew what to do. Let me guess.... in Park and Neutral the car starts and when you put it in Drive it acts like it wont go till you press the gas harder than usual.

O.K let's start over and maybe we can figure out something.
First drop all the history about the car. Let's start with the "new" engine. Don't care how many shops it's been in, except, remember them and don't go back. Dealer hooked it up to what?
Another rip off, get your money back. Stay away from dealers except for warranty work.
Now, was the engine NEW, a rebuild, junk yard, same year, what?
Did this problem start when the engine was first started or later ?
Does this engine have electronic ignition or a rotor and points system ?
Will the car restart easily after it dies ?
will it sit and idle for several minutes ?
Try a steep hill or drive up on some car ramps or a mound of dirt,
get one end of the car , start with the front, about a foot off the ground start and let it idle for a few minutes. Do the same to the back end.
The raising up will let you know if you have a possible carb. float problem. If the engine stalls you probably should look for a low float level.
If the engine dies at idle on level ground, and you have Electronic ignition, I would replace the magnetic pick up in the distributor.
This is the same symptom as stalling at low speed. It may not stall at idle but it would verify the diagnosis.
Forgot to mention it could be, but not likely, a vacuum leak.
write your post again and see if we can solve the problem, if it is still there

Possibly the idle is set too low, a vacuum line is off, broken, lose, not in it's correct poistion since you mention the engine was replaced. Is is carburated or fuel injected? Could be dirty or faulty either one! Is the replacement engine new , rebuilt, or junk yard material? Could have a burnt valve, intake manifold leak, etc.
Hard to diagnose a problem from the computer! really need to be under the hood. I'm surprised Ford couldn't find the problem- and then again nothing Ford does really surprises me! Ask around and see if you can't find one of the old timers that works or worked on Fords. It'll be your best bet because most of these mechanics today are nothing more than "parts replacers"!

F. O. R. D.
FIX OR REPAIR DAILY
If you have a new engine, and all new parts, i must assume that the ECM has been replaced already. I know that when they get hot, they do cut out the power to the engine. Once they cool down, you have no problems again until it heats up.
Last thought , it may be a temp sensor or O2 sensor.. If the sensors readings are off then the computer may think that the engine is hotter than it really is causing a lean condition thus causing the stalling condition. I really dont know what parts were changed already so it is pretty hard to minimize your problem areas.
Sorry and good luck..........

I like a challenge ,since every action has a reaction ,everything mechanically and electrically with your car is and seems to be doing fine, but there are some areas that can elude even the most seasoned of mechanics, have one of your seasoned mechanic check your EGR valve, the torque converter lockup and the brake booster and related vacuum parts, since the symptom is prevalent when you are driving slow or when you stop you can check these areas and related parts, since they have a lot to do With maintaining rpm,s and are outside of the detectable radar of the computer and diagnostic equipment, email with more challenges, thank you for the question.

The video can not load fast enough for you to watch what it has loaded so it pauses while it is trying to load some more. If you where able to watch them before with the same internet connection that it might be slowing for some reason. If you are sharing your internet connection than someone else on the connection may be consuming a lot of the bandwidth. You can still watch YouTube videos, just press pause, and let them load before you play them.

OK this is simple cut your losses and get rid of it obviously there is something really wrong with this car unless you just have the money to keep putting into this car keep it but my god if the dealership can't fix the problem it can't be fixed
