You can locate the fuel filter on the right frame rail, near the fuel tank. Check and see if the hose fittings on both ends are clean. If there is more than a light coating of dust, clean the fittings before going on with changing the filter...

The 1997 Taurus has three filtering locations for fuel. One in the tank (not serviceable, part of the fuel pump assembly), one in the line (rear of the vehicle, close by the fuel tank, has a flexible plastic line, requires special tool for removal) and one at the fuel rail (not serviceable) If your vehicle is a flex fuel vehicle buy the filter at the dealer because a standard gasoline only filter will cause the vehicle to set a check engine light and will restrict flow, it will give the engine management system fits. Good Luck...

The fuel filter is located on the undercarriage between the driver and the gas tank on the driver side, or when in doubt ,just follow the fuel lines, you will come to a large clyndrical object that has a flat side and a half cone shape on the other side with two connecting hoses on each side, that,s how I searched for them in auto school, good luck

find the fuel line in the engine compartment, and look for the pump (it's a small, 2" in diameter, round, metal object with a line running to it, and from it).
The fuel filter will be in that line, in the engine compartment. Do you know what the fuel filter looks like? It's probably concealed in a device that fits the shape and approximate size.
Additionally, you can look at the manual and see where it is located.

Under the hood before the carburator. You should be able to trace from the carburator down the line to the filter.
