These old computers are quite fun to play with. In order to answer your question, we would need to know what operating system is being used. Depending on how old it is, could be cpm, dos, or a couple of others.

You're talking about the dos commands. Those were something else. Look on eBay or Amazon.com and see if you can find an old book on dos commands.
Each program on that elderly computer shouldn't need a new dos command unless you are talking about the computers that use the 12 inch floppy discs.
I have one in my basement an 8086 that uses the 5 inch floppies. My other old one is a 386 and uses both the 5 inch floppies and the 3.5 inch floppies. Neither of these required any special commands unless of course I wanted to copy files or programs or write a batch or execute file.

it most likely has windows 3 on it

to see what it does.
commands you never want to use are
fdisk
and probable never
format

If it will boot, download a .iso with another computer from Ubuntu linux, burn a cd, install, ad you are good for 20 more years. As far as code goes, nothing has really changed only improved upon. Would probably be a good router too, with a little work.
