I have heard I need to "oil" it- is there a product I should buy? How often does it need to be treated? Can a dry cleaner do it?

If you go to your local leather shop and ask about a good leather cleaner you can do it yourself at home. I don't trust dry cleaners with this kind of thing, besides it can be very expensive. If you get a good cleaner and clean it once a year it should stay soft and supple for years to come.
