I want to go there to help dig artifacts for the Cairo museum, meet the regular non tourist folks, immerse myself in the culture of the people, hopefully learn the language and make friends for life.

Audiogirl, Digging and gettin dirty is not a tourist IMHO. I'd like to go there and live for a few years.

I was in Egypt for 10 day this past June. Being a tourist isn't that bad....I had a driver and guide ....it was just the three of us. I have to say it was great to be able to learn about things, was able to meet so many great local folks and go places I might not of thought of had I not been on tour. The Egyptian people embrass tourists, thats their main source of income for the country. I would love to do all the things you mentioned but only after going as a tourist....so I would get that out of the way...see the sites...then go back to where I loved...and skip the ones I didn't.
Go, you'll love it there.

I fell in love with an Egyptian who since I met him has filled me with many wonderful stories about his homeland, so I will be going one day soon, hopefully after Xmas, and I won't have to go like a "tourist" (as if thats so bad anyway?haha)because he can show me around. I'm especially looking forward to goin to Sinai peninsula which I heard is like a year round beachy resort town! I'll post on here about my trip!

it somewhat is safer than some factors of the united kingdom. despite if there are some roads ie close to the Sinai the place its terrific to shuttle with organised communities as there has been the occassional theft from travelers and so on. oftentimes the excursions have an excellent form of police protection or perhaps in streets of vacationer factors the police do inspection tests to make advantageous there are not any risky persons shifting into the factors.

you will never find a place as much safe as egypt, go for it you will have a lot of fun,
but don't act like a tourist, try to live like the egyptians and you will see things you won't belive.
