In the year 1804, the first (steam) locomotive pulled the first freight cars. It was built by a man named Richard Trevithick, who had previously designed steam engines used for pumping water out of mines.

The first English Passenger train ran from Manchester to Liverpool in 1825. The train was called the rocket and was built by George stephenson. It reached a top speed of 25 mph. The then MP for liverpool George Huskinson was hit by the train and killed on the same day. This becoming the first victim of a railway accident.
