Another day in history?
I t was independence that brought this multitude of illustrious persons to Ghana. But what brought independence itself to Ghana. But the struggle can perhaps be best understood if it is traced backwards.
Independence came on 6th March 1957. The fact that this was to be the day of days had been learned by most of the population from a broadcast on 18th September 1956. On that day, the announcer read the dispatch from the Secretary of State for the Colonies to the Governor of the Gold Coast. Dr Nkrumah had read the Prime Minister the message, a few hours previously, to the Legislative Assembly, the Prime Minister.
Her Majesty's Government will at the first available opportunity introduce into the United Kingdom Parliament a Bill to accord independence to the Gold Coast and, subject to Parliamentary approval, Her Majesty's Government intend that independence should come about on the 6th March 1957.
The people's reaction to this epoch-making, matter-of-fact message was described by a writer in the magazine, Drum:
For a moment, until the words registered in people's minds, there was a deafening silence. The came the earthquake of emotion that made the sea hesitate from breaking on the beach.

Leeds Football Club.
If the loss of Nightingale was not enough, on Tuesday, 18th September 1956, fire destroyed the West Stand.
During the early hours of Tuesday, September 18, a fire caught hold of the Elland Road stadium and gutted the West Stand. The fire was so ferocious that large sections of the pitch were scorched by the heat. The blaze consumed the entire structure, offices, kit, club records, physiotherapy equipment, dressing rooms, directors' rooms and press box. All that remained was a charred skeleton of twisted, smouldering metal.

I assume this is home work, so what class were you taken? I see nothing earth shattering in the Historical Timeline for this specific date but there are major events close to this time period. In fact, I think they have the date wrong and are trying to point out the “Hungarian Revolution”. I am providing one web site that reference this date but it plays but a minor role. The “Hungarian Revolution” was one of the most important events of the 20 th. century and actually helped lead to the down fall of the Soviet Empire. If this wrong, please drop me a line as to what happened on that date.

Note: Note: Is it me or is it pretty immature to be on a serious Answer site giving dumb quips like the Sun cane up; I don’t know (if you don’t know don’t show the world you are literate). They must have never learned to proof read or check their spelling. You see them bragging about being American and that they and us are the greatest people in the world but yet “publish something like this-starting without a capital, misspelled and plain embarrassing: hmmmm, dont knw.

God Bless You and the Southern People
