i think its because they wanted to show their heritage but make it their own...
as for the american flag...i have seen many flags and it is by far the most beautiful of all and the meaning behind it and what it represents is what makes it so much more than than a piece of cloth.

I think it was modelled after the British maritime flag.
Maybe they weren't thinking of that big of a break. Anyway, wouldn't a trade relationship ultimately been more beneficial to Britain and the US than some colonial arrangement?
Why is the British Union flag used in America as a tribute to hard rock?
Why is the confederate flag looking a bit too much like the Union Jack?
Why did Disney put the 1801 union jack VERY PROMINANTLY in the movie Pocahontas, as opposed to a flag more appropriate to 1507.

Why do so many other countries that have had nothing to do with Britain have the same colors as the British flag?
You're another one of those fools who just can't get over the fact that we won a war against big, red-dressed British soldiers with guns through the efforts of farmers with pitchforks.
