The FCC doesn't allow indecent lyrics on the air. They change all obvious drug references. And because Tom Petty still wants his songs to be on the radio, he recorded an alternate version.

the higher ups thought "let's roll another joint " was being irresponsible and not a very good example. many radio stations refused to play it with those word, so it was changed to "lets hit another joint"

They change lyrics or bleep them out because it may be offensive to some people. The radio station we listen to at work goes to dead air when Kid Rocks sings "fuelling up on cocaine and whiskey" but just for the word cocaine.

THEY didn't change it....

There are usually "clean" versions of songs made by artists for the songs that (originally) contained swearing or drug references etc.
This is so that they can get played during the day.

Sometimes they just bleep it out or blank it out.
Also on music videos they will usually blur out cigarettes and alcohol, or record a "clean" version so it can be shown before the watershed.

Its to please the holy rollers and people who don't appreciate the true words.
That other song more recently Your Beautifully has been changed from "she could see from my face that I was f$cking high" to "flying high"
