many... I had an 03 Escort ZX2 that had FIVE trannys go out in the 2 years I owned it... here are some I experienced:
- ATF Burning smell (like brake fluid)
- Black crust on dipstick
- Slipping into/out of gears
- Rattling
- No go (usually either forward OR backward but USUALLY not both)
- Transmission light on instrument panel
- Antifreeze in Transmission fluid or Transmission fluid in Antifreeze

Grind and rattle at speed...
Slipping gears or taking way too long to shift gears if an automatic, engine races before shift.
Won't engage if it's a manual.

Slipping, Shuddering, slow take off, burned smell on dipstick, very dark and discolored fluid...
