The smell gets worse when the water is going down the drain, and the gnats are little flies that come right out of the drain. This is really wierd. Please someone help.

I tried pouring bleach down there, and it didnt help. I wonder if this is a big problem or not?

there is a hole in the drain near the top that leads up to a hole in the sink. this serves 2 purposes an air way so water flows down the drain easier. the other is for overflow prevention.the reason I mention this is because even if you pour bleach in the drain it wont kill anything in the "overflow channel" so the gnats could be in there if you poured bleach down there and they are still alive.

Oh no, you will prob. need a plumber to rip it up and see what's going on the mold could be a very bad scenario.

Find a plumber that is trustworthy, ask your friends. If the pipes are not intact, whatever goes down the drain could be bleeding into flooring and/or drywall.

Did you have a home inspector go thru the house before you bought it? That's important. You might have recourse if the former owner knew there was a plumbing issue!

Call your real estate agent - then also report this problem in writing to your real estate agent AND his office. Check your documents about what the former owner put on the list!

If the house sat empty for a period of time,
the drain traps might have dried up and now
are allowing sewer gas to vent back up thru
the pipes. Run water in all sinks and toilets
to refill traps with water. If the house wasn't
empty, you probably have a mold problem from
leaking pipes or outside water getting in.
May need a plumber or do some outside work
to divert the rain water away from the foundation
of the house.

for the gnats i suggest a few things if you can still find em with fall coming in durring the east coast transition

1.) vanilla scented incence they hate that scent when you burn it

2.) a bug zapper lantern on a thin rope loop (curtain rod pull tie rope for drapes works well) hanging from the retaining ring above the drain it will kill em by luring em as they run from the scent right into the path of the bug zapper if you close off acess to that room i had it too cause of the wooded field next door to my apt complex

Try pouring a bottle of bleach down the drain. That should kill most anything that's down there.

have a plumber clean the trap in the sink piping. Then have them check the stink pipe on the roof to see if it has a clog. If it is cloged the gases will come up through the sink rather than the stink pipe.

sounds like you might of bought a problem.. mold is bad 4 you.. if you had a inspector and he didn't pick up on the mold, then you got lucky and it very well might be just surface mold, that a little bleach can get rid of.. you have some great answers, so i'll walk quietly out the door.. >>>>
