I've taken the train from Boston to Los Angeles a few years ago and absolutely loved it! You get to see so much more of the country that you may have never really experienced on your own. Granted, we did fly home but absolutely loved the train ride.
Now, if you have a AAA card, you can get a little bit of a discount.
Here are some extra tips if you decide to take the train:
*Pack an extra bag of a blanket, pillow, toiletries, and change of clothes. You have to check your bags so whatever you carry on is it. Unless you plan on shelling out the extra money for a sleeper car/room, you'll be sleeping in a chair just bigger than an airline chair but with a foot rest
*If you are coming from the NYC area, you'll probably switch trains in Chicago. If so, drop your extra bags in a locker and carry a backpack of your toiletries and one change of clothes. Weird? Well read on....since you'll be on the train for awhile find a gym (there is one just around the corner from the station) and use their showers. That's right! Just buy a day pass and you have a shower and/or workout (if time permits)
*After showering, check out a restaurant (preferably a pizza place). That way you have lunch. But the purpose of this is to order a large pizza to go. Have them slice it into smaller pieces. Bring the pizza onto the train for dinner that night. Its so much cheaper than their dining car. And if you've made friends along the way, you can share your food.
Typically the train does not stop for a long period of time so you can't hop on and off as you please. They are just there to pick up and drop off passengers. Once in a while they do have one longer stop to refuel and clean up a bit. Take advantage if there is a longer stop. We went to a liquor store around the corner and brought it back for the rest of the trip.
One last thing...make friends with your train conductors. If you're nice to them, they'll look the other way if you choose to sleep on the floor or to drink booze from outside the train.
If you have the chance, pick up a blow up pool raft (the small one that only fits one). You can blow it up and sleep on it if you can score one of the front seats in your car. Stick it on the floor and you can sprawl out a bit.
Although I do like to fly, I really had a wonderful time on my train ride. You meet so many interesting people. You can watch the sun rise from the observation car as well as sunsets and storms. Have a wonderful time!

Yeah by plane is faster but if you like travel and enjoying sight seeing, the best is to catch a train and I love to travel and it depends on the availability of time. So if time is not an issue I will go train and if on the contrary I have no option to take the plane.
Definitely on your case it seems that you have time so take the train and enjoy the trip and have lots of fun. Cheer

I would choose a train if the prices are similar and time is not an issue. I agree with you that a train ride would probably let you see more of the country. It will give you a greater sense of having traveled, instead of in-one-door, wait a few hours, out-another-door, poof you're there.
If we had a more extensive and better run train system, I would probably take trains more than planes (unless of course I don't have the time).

If you have the time, take the train. Air travel is now like eating at Wendy's. It is still food, but not steak. Traveling the Rockies via train is steak.

I'd go train - see the country. Depending on where you're coming from, this could be a beautiful trip!

If you are into sightseeing then go with the train but if you need to get there in the quickest possible time go by plane.
Bottom line is what your needs are.

I think the train sounds more fun, if you have the time to enjoy it.
