Last night my grandmother was admitted to the hospital with a severe headache and her blood pressure was like 235/111. They thought that she was having a stroke. So they started running tests. They saw where she had a stroke a couple of months ago. (this was unknown until then) She is constantly vomiting and the pain hasn't eased yet. She just yells and screams b/c she is in so much pain. They are constantly doing different tests on her. All the doctors in the county are now working on her case. They STILL have no idea what is going on. What in the world can be wrong with her?? Has anyone heard of anything like this??

It appears from your question that your g'mother had a 'hypertensive emergency'. You have not mentioned if she was a known hypertensive before this or not...
Anyways the first concern in patients with headache, brain related symptoms and high BP like your g'mom had would be a bleed in the head... the CT scan of the head (without contrast) is usually one of the first tests done and is usually pretty good at picking them up.... the other tests will be to make sure none of the other major target organs are damaged...heart, kidney and eyes.
Behaviour changes can happen due to very high BP...this is hypertensive encephalopathy and usually resolves once BP is controlled for a few days. Maybe longer in older people..
Strokes can cause BP to get elevated, and elevated BP can cause strokes...if no other cause for the headache is found her docs will do an MRI of the head which will show if there has been a new stroke. Repeating the CT scan in 3-4 days may also be able to provide this information.
Hope your grammy gets well soon.

she is feeling the way she is because of the hypertension-high blood pressure. the doctors are trying to stabilize that-get it to a normal level or range which might be hard because of your grandmother's age. also, maybe she has a clogged vein from the stroke she had months ago since that could put her in serious danger! she is vomiting because she is stressing herself out...you and your family try to keep her calm...as for the doctors they know what they are doing...i do not know the diagnosis of what your grandma has but give it a couple of days and the doctors will come with a result! also, maybe the doctors are looking for infections, weak immune system, bacterias, viruses and anything that can make your grandmother feel the way she is. i am sorry that i cannot give you a sraight forward answer but i did my best according to the science classes i took!

Wow. That's a horrible blood pressure. Is her pain just the head or anywhere else? If just her head, then she could have an aneurysm. He last stroke was caused by a blood clot in the brain or a blood clot that started out somewhere else in the body (legs, lungs) and traveled to her brain. Sometimes they are painful, sometimes they are painless. Depends on how big it is and where in the brain it is. It could be on the part of the brain that regulates speech (thus the crying out).

I am sorry.

I'm very sorry you are going through this. It's difficult to see a loved one suffering.

First off, remember that the health care professionals helping your grandmother have her best interests at heart. If you have questions about something they are or are not doing, you or your parents should be able to ask them about it. If they blow you off, or don't give you an answer you can understand, keep pushing. If they are rude or unhelpful (they are only people, after all), get their name and title (doctor, nurse, etc...) and report them to the hospital administration.

As to what is wrong with your grandmother no one in here is going to be able to tell you. There are lots of things that could be wrong, and she is in the best place to find that out. Her symptoms are not all that unusual, but they could indicate many possible problems. I know it's hard to see her in pain, and I'm sure you are very frustrated that she hasn't been diagnosed and treated yet. Be patient, and just make sure your grandmother knows you are there for her. That is the best thing you can do.

I wish you luck and I hope for the best possible outcome for your grandmother.

I am sorry to hear of your grandmother's problems, and I hope she is feeling better soon.

The immediate issue is that the doctors will not want to administer treatment until they have discovered what is worng. Let's hope that happens very soon. If she has had a stroke before, in all likelihood that is what it is this time.

It sounds like she is in good hands, and we must pray that she will be OK. She is frotunate to have a caring grand daughter such as you.

aren't they trying to get her blood pressure down? that can cause headaches, vomiting, stroke etc. perhaps they are looking for the cause of her high blood pressure but there are medications they can give her to bring it down.

If it is a good hospital they know what to do.
You can suggest complete body scanning.
Tell them to consult specialists over Internet
