I have a white coating on my tongue, should I gargle with head and shoulders in case it is dandruff?

Umm you do not get dandruff on your tongue.
It can be from smoking or the lack of brushing ones teeth.
Try using a toothbrush and some toothpaste first.

There is a possibility that it is thrush or it could also be Kawasaki disease which has a symptom of swollen tongue with a white coating and big red bumps. It could also be strep throat or candida. Thrush is a yeast infection that causes white patches in the mouth and on the tongue. Thrush is most common in babies and older adults, but it can occur at any age. Some people get thrush when they take certain medicines, such as antibiotics or inhaled corticosteroids. The symptom of thrush is white patches that stick to the inside of the mouth and tongue. Kawasaki disease usually happens in kids under 5 but has happened in adults, as well. The first phase, which can last for up to 2 weeks, usually involves a persistent fever higher than 104°F and lasts for at least 5 days. Other symptoms that typically develop include: severe redness in the eyes, a rash on the stomach, chest, and genitals, red, dry, cracked lips, swollen tongue with a white coating and big red bumps, sore, irritated throat, swollen palms of the hands and soles of the feet with a purple-red color and swollen lymph nodes During the second phase, which usually begins within 2 weeks of when the fever started, the skin on the hands and feet may begin to peel in large pieces. Strep throat is a bacterial infection in the throat and the tonsils. The throat gets irritated and inflamed, causing a sudden, severe sore throat. The most common symptoms of strep throat are a sudden, severe sore throat, pain when you swallow, fever over 101F, swollen tonsils and lymph nodes and white or yellow spots on the back of a bright red throat. You may also have a headache and belly pain. Less common symptoms are a red skin rash, vomiting, not feeling hungry, and body aches. Candida Albicans is a yeast that occurs naturally in the human body. Normally it lives in harmony with a variety of other microorganisms and actually performs a couple important functions. The problem occurs when something upsets the balance of bacteria in the body and this allows the yeast organism to proliferate and take over all the healthy microorganisms. It has alot of symptoms so google it and do some research. All in all, i'd say make a doctors appt. They'll be the best at telling you what you have.

A white coating on the tongue can be caused by things other than thrush (oral candidiasis), such as other medical conditions and medication. Generally with "thrush" there are also white deposits (plaques) in the far corners, left and/or right, of the oral cavity. A coating can also be a result of a food buildup on the tongue. Include brushing your tongue as a regular part of oral hygiene. If you are unable to easily remove the coating, don't force it and see your health care provider or dentist for further evaluation.

Its a yeast infection. Some medications will cause it. Especially diskus inhaled medicine for asthma, such as Advair, and some antibiotics. Dr. can perscribe a medicine that u gargle for 7 to 10 days and that will take care of it.

It is not dandruff so obviously you should not be using those head and shoulders kind of things for gargling.
quite likely to be due to dehydration often or may be due to deficiency of vitamins. it may also be due to fungal infection but unusual as these fungal infections are seen in those with prolonged antibiotic intake and obviously immunocompromised
