Do you pay for WiFi? Depends on where you are. If you go to Panera Bread or somewhere that advertises "Free WiFi", then no. If you're in McDonald's or an airport which charges you to access the Internet, then yes, you'll have to put it on a charge card.
I wonder why you really needed an external WiFi card and accompanying software as I thought the 1940 and 1950's both had internal WiFi capability.

Assuming you're in somewhere with free WiFi....
Go to the Start Menu, to Programs, then to iPAQ Wireless. Tap Status:Off and change it to Status: ON. You may connect automatically and then can go right to Start Menu, Programs, Internet Explorer and get online.

If you don't, tap View WiFi Networks and you will see a list of any available networks you can potentially connect with.

If you are in a WiFi node the internal HP1900 software does all the work for you, especially if the WiFi is free. If you have to pay for the WiFi service, you'll discover that when the WiFi connects and you go onto Internet Explorer.

Also... please remember the battery life of a 1900 series HP is about a week, and less if you keep a card in the slot. It does not hurt these pda's to keep them plugged into a charging stand. Use a car charger. If you're going away without it for more than a week, leave your pda plugged into it's charging stand or with its power cord and dongle. If the battery gets too low, you will lose ANY programs and data which was not hard-wired into the pda originally... including contacts and calendar. Always use ActiveSync to back up your pda.
