I live in London, and so basketball is a very tiny part of English life. However for me, basketball is my favourite. My school doesn't really have any coaches, and I really want to know how to get excellent at my shooting. I really want to become very good at it, to the point where I can swoosh the shots most of the time. I have a hoop in my garden, so any skills or techniques would be much appreciated. I would also like help with lay-ups, so I can be good enough to score them easily. Also, I would like to know how you do reverse layups.

thayellowmonkey has the right idea. I have never had a shooting coach or training from any coach, but when I'm shooting and I catch fire I can light it up. All it takes is practice, but I won't lie, it will take a few years for you to get really good. I just watched the NBA players shoot and I would follow their form. Also some advice from Reggie Miller when he would talk on TNT. Practice like crazy. I haven't played basketball in so long and it's killing me. I used to practice from 4-10 pm everyday.

To improve at shooting, it's not just practice that's important. It's proper technique that is more important. If your practicing the wrong way all you are doing is reinforcing bad habits. Your best bet is to get some instruction DVDs. Go to ebay. Shooting is not self taught. For every improper shot, you need to practice correctly twice. So don't waste time, just get a DVD and learn from a professional.

PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! Some people have already told you how to shoot, so I wont. Watch those in the NBA that shoot well-Nash, Rip Hamilton, Nowitzki, McGrady. Reverse layups need spin on the ball-experiment by spinning the ball a toward the rim when going for a reverse. GOOD LUCK!

p.s. I was once just like you, like every basketball player was. You just have to work hard and play more!

Hold the ball with one hand, right hand if you are right-handed, left hand if you are left handed. Then just put the other hand beside the ball, and hold it like that. Then bend your knees, and shoot. On lay-ups, it's like your arm and leg are connected by a string, they both go up at the same time. I hope that helps.

To "swoosh" a basket, extend your arm to its greatest length above your head while you jump. At the top of your jump, release the ball as it rests on your fingertips - not the palm of the hand. End your shot with the fingers of your shooting hand pointing downwards toward your wrist. (That's called "putting your hand in the basket".) For reverse lay-ups, take an extra dribble underneath the basket. For right-handed reverse lay-ups, jump off your left foot and lay the ball off the backboard. Simply reverse the procedure for lay-ups from the left side. And PRACTICE....PRACTICE.....PRACTICE!

actually a good shooter uses the strength from his legs all the way to his wrist. you must bend your knees and stretch it then with your arms L shaped you must release the ball on the peak of your jump and have a follow through of your wrist.
