Your local post office makes money from the transactions it performs and services it provides. Until recently, the government paid the post office so pensioners to could their pension. If you can pay bills at the post office, they will get paid for that. Driving licences and passport applications can also make them money as they earn fees and commissions on these. Obviously, your post office will also make money on the stamps and goods it sells. Most post offices do not make money with the move towards electronic banking and fewer people using them; hence the high number of post offices that are being closed.

They don't make money, they are happy to be subsidised from the tax payer (as they usually run at a loss) , As long as they are getting good wages for doing nowt they are happy. When anyone says close a post office the staff then cry 'what about the poor pensioners and the great local service we do,etc, the unions start beating their drum also). Remember it all extra tax we are paying every week to keep the idol content (as in most public services ).
